Stephen Tanzer's IWC, June 2011

Vivid ruby. Alluring, high-pitched aromas of red berries, cherry, cinnamon and minerals; shows vivacity as well as depth. This silky, intensely flavored midweight offers highly aromatic red fruit flavors that gain flesh and heft in the glass while maintaining finesse. Finishes round, silky and broad, with harmonious tannins and lingering florality. Should age on its balance but this Bordeaux blend is surprisingly approachable now.

There’s an interesting and complex tannin structure to this bone-dry, Merlot-based Bordeaux blend, grown in the little known but high-quality Sonoma Mountain appellation of Sonoma County. With an earthiness to the wild blackberry and blueberry flavors, it’s a bit edgy and coarse, but that’s a function of youth. Give it a good eight years and see how it’s doing.

About Winery

On a fall day in 1976, as ravens taunted from tree branches above, Joel Peterson worked doggedly to bring in four tons of grapes before a looming thunderstorm hit. The fruit he crushed that night was used for one of two single-vineyard Sonoma County Zins - the first wines to bear Ravenswood's signature ring of ravens. The fledgling winery got off to a great start when those wines came in #1 and #2 at a prestigious San Francisco tasting in 1979.
