about this wine:
Another impressive offering from the Terlato & Chapoutier union is the Shiraz-Viognier. It's also uniquely blended, using the Côte Rôtie tradition of combining 5% Viognier with Syrah, which produces a spicy, aromatic wine.
"We are not interested in making wines that are anything less than beautiful and provocative," Chapoutier says. "The vineyard is young but greatness is possible."

A dark, opaque center as is typical of this wine. Shy at first, a good swirl coaxes aromatic notes of cocoa-dusted raspberry along with spicy and floral elements of lavender, sandalwood, and a savory note of grilled meats (Australian garrigue!) A balanced and somewhat restrained presence on the palate, there is a real juiciness and rounded, cushy fruit viscosity in the middle. Finishes with extremely fine tannins and a hint of granitic mineral. A consistently great value in sophisticated cool-climate syrah

Starts off with a blast of dark berry and spice, then expands into nuances of wet earth, crushed stone and coffee, the fruit rejoining the chorus on the finish. Medium-weight, with a sense of refinement underneath. Best from 2012 through 2018. 5,200 cases made. -HS (Smart buy)
