The special cuvee, the 2009 Grand Sol, is an outstanding wine made from 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a big wine at 15.5% natural alcohol, but that's not unusual in this vintage. Plenty of glycerin and dense, concentrated, jammy blue, red and black fruits interwoven again with some crushed chalk and spring flowers make for some complex aromatics. Add some raspberry notes in the fruit flavor profile in the mid-palate, in addition to the full-bodied finish, and you have a real winner and a sleeper of the vintage. Drink it over the next decade or more.

Ripe and refined, with dark, smoldering tobacco framing the sleek notes of melted fig, crushed plum and black currant preserves. Shows nice weight, but stays sleek and defined through the finish. Drink now through 2018. -JM
