Note: a 1 ha blend of Groseilles, Baudes, Noirots and Gruenchers, which interestingly are all bunched together, geographically speaking. This is slightly riper and certainly more aromatically complex with its pretty and attractively nuanced red pinot fruit and violet notes that precede rich, supple and silky middle weight flavors that are also slightly firmer on the persistent, balanced and delicious finish. This should drink well almost immediately yet benefit from 5 to 8 years of cellaring if desired. Interestingly, while this is certainly more complex, it is not necessarily any more refined than the villages. - Comments: Outstanding ♥

About Winery

I have only had a few vintages of this producer's wines, so I hardly know them well. Yet I continue to be impressed with what I have seen to date. Pierre Bertheau, a diminutive, enthusiastic, middle-aged man, is the most underrated producer in Chambolle-Musigny.

He believes in a warm fermentation of 32 C, ages his wines for 18 months in oak barrels, only a tiny percentage of which are new, and does neither a filtration nor fining prior to bottling. In large-quantity vintages, over 50% of his production is sold to negociants.

His top wines are his extraordinary Bonnes Mares, one of the best made from this Grand Cru, as well as his Chambolle-Musigny les Amoureuses. But don't ignore his Chambolle Musigny les Charmes or his Chambolle Musigny, which have been consistently impressive in flavor and complexity and sell for one-third the price of his Grand Crus.

This is an unheralded, meticulously run estate that is worthy of the most serious Burgundy connoisseurs' attention. Bertheau's wines appear to be capable of lasting a decade in most vintages.

**** -- An excellent to outstanding producer.
--- Robert Parker, "Burgundy"

Producer note: Complete responsibility of managing this 6.18 ha domaine has fallen to François Bertheau after the recent death of his father Pierre. Effective with the 2004 vintage, there will be a new label and the name will change from Pierre Bertheau et Fils to François Bertheau.
