Neil Mechanic, JJ Buckley, August 2011

A Columbia Valley blend of 51% cabernet sauvignon, 29% syrah and 20% merlot. Purple/black color. A bowl of cassis, currant and a cocoa resonates on the palate, while plush candied fruit takes this wine to another textural dimension. If pressed to use one word to describe this effort, it would be 'mouthcoating'. While weighty on the mid-palate, the finish is light on its feet with a kiss of herbs, cedar, licorice and tar, supported by cleansing acidity and just the right amount of barrique on the 2-3 minute finish. One of the best cabernet blends from the States that I have tasted in some time. Bravo!

Good saturated, bright ruby-red. Aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate, licorice and gunflint. Silky on entry, then minerally and firm, showing a copacetic balance of fruit and juicy acidity. Finishes with good mineral lift and fairly fine-grained tannins. Mark McNeilly noted that the team did a saignee of between 12% and 15% to concentrate the musts in 2009, but this wine does not seem at all overworked.

The blend is 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Syrah, and 20% Merlot, delivering pure fruit flavors of black raspberry, blackberry and cassis. Sourced from young vines, and mostly Red Mountain vineyards, despite the Columbia valley label. Succulent and brambly, with dusty tannins and a finish with dark coffee flavors. -P.G.

About Winery

Mark Ryan McNeilly founded Mark Ryan Winery in 1999 with the goal of making the best wines in Washington State. Largely self-taught, Mark honed the craft of winemaking through rigorous study and the  advice of some of the area's most experienced producers.

In the early years the winery was transient. The first vintages of Long Haul and Dead Horse were produced crushed and pressed in garages of friends and family, barrels aged in warehouses in the Seattle Area, and finally settling in Woodinville, WA  in 2003.

Over a decade later, Mark Ryan Winery has grown in size, earned acclaim from wine-lovers and critics alike, and garnered respect from the state's elite producers. The goal, however, remains the same. Make delicious wines.
