The estate's 2009 Tenuta di Trinoro presents exotic notes of wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and licorice all of which come together on a silky, polished frame. Smoke, incense and a host of other seductive, beguiling aromas and flavors add complexity as they wrap around the seriously intense finish. The 2009 Tenuta shows off marvelous intensity and a full-throttle personality while retaining a touch more freshness than is sometimes the case. In 2009 the Tenuta is 42% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc, 12%, Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

Andrea Franchetti's 2009s are stellar. The wines show gorgeous, expressive fruit with less of the extreme ripeness and heaviness of past years. In most years Franchetti picks extremely late, but in 2009 the vines reached full phenolic ripeness earlier than most years. Franchetti explains that the climate at Trinoro has become increasingly tropical, thus creating conditions that are more favorable for Merlot, hence his decision to reintroduce the Palazzi bottling in 2009. All three 2009s are stellar.

(42% merlot, 42% cabernet rranc, 12% cabernet sauvignon and 4% petit verdot): Bright red-ruby. Explosive aromas of red cherry, blueberry, mocha, vanilla and sweet pipe tobacco. Utterly palate-saturating yet weightless, conveying wonderful clarity and cut to its crushed red fruit, floral and sweet brown spice flavors. Very impressive on the extremely long, silky finish, where the flavors build slowly and inexorably, showing outstanding lift and creamy sweetness. This should evolve in bottle for decades, but even today it's impossible to resist. The 2009 vintage was another hot one, but overcast and cooler fall weather in the Sarteano area allowed Franchetti to pick later than usual. The extended hang time has allowed for one of the most impressive young Trinoros in some time; the wine is also different than usual in that it's relatively top-heavy with merlot. In this respect it reminded me a little of the 2004 vintage (which included an unheard-of 83% merlot), though the two wines are very different and the 2009 clearly better. 95+
