A very interesting nose combines notes of stone, fennel and an earthy hint while leading to rich, mouth coating and extract-rich flavors that culminate in a balanced, delicious and solidly complex finish. This long and direct effort is not especially elegant but the quality is excellent all the same.

The 2009 Savigny-les-Beaune Les Vergelesses is laced with smoke, ash, slate and a number of other mineral-tinged nuances that add complexity to the fruit. This is texturally very beautiful, especially in the way the wine fleshes out to the finish. Readers looking for an introduction to the 2009 vintage at Boillot won't be disappointed by this outstading effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012+. --- Antonio Galloni

(90% finishes with its malo; this and the subsequent '09s are domain wines I sampled at Boillot's cellar at his home) Full yellow color. Yellow fruits and menthol on the nose. Sexy, tactile and round, with an enticing citrus edge. Very dry, intense wine with charm.

"After making wine at his family's property
(Domaine Jean Boillot) for more than a decade [Henri Boillot] quit in 1984 to launch his own negociant business.

After sufficiently impressing his grandfather, Jean Boillot, with the quality of his wines Henri rejoined the estate and eventually bought out his brothers and sisters in 2005. He immediately changed the name of the winery from Domaine Jean Boillot to Domaine Henri Boillot to avoid confusion with his brother's property, Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot. In case you're not sufficiently confused, Henri also continued to market his negociant wines under the Maison Henri Boillot label.

The quality? Well, across the board Boillot's bottlings are pure, rich, accurate, powerful and brilliant. As The Wine Advocate neatly stated, "As a group these wines showed vibrancy, excellent acidity, genuine vineyard character, and they tasted damn good too! Differences between Meursaults from Charmes and Genevrieres were obvious. It was much the same for the Pulignys and the Grand Crus. In every case, the Boillot wines served  as excellent representatives of the fundamental character one has come to expect from these vineyards."" --- TSTonline
