The inky/purple-colored, elegant, full-bodied 2009 Crozes-Hermitage Les Varonnieres (1,064 cases) exhibits attractive notes of licorice, black olives, creme de cassis, forest floor and roasted herbs as well as zesty acidity for the vintage. It should drink beautifully for 15+ years. 92+ -Robert Parker

Inky ruby. Intense, spice-accented aromas of red and dark berry liqueur and potpourri, with a smoky overtone. Juicy, palate-staining black raspberry and blueberry flavors expand with air and pick up notes of allspice and candied licorice. Clings impressively on the finish, which leaves notes of violet pastille and cracked pepper behind.

Rich and nicely toasty, with lots of baker's chocolate and espresso notes, but also ample flesh, joined by succulent layers of blackberry, plum and fig fruit as well. The long, smoky finish lets the roasted wood note dissolve into the core in a wonderful way. Best from 2013 through 2019. -JM
