Devon Magee, JJ Buckley, January 2012

80% merlot, 20% cabernet franc aged for 18 months in new oak. The purity and density of fruit is center stage here with kirsch and candied strawberries and ripe cassis aromas at the forefront. The clay soils atop the Pomerol plateau added a dimension of depth, and a hint of restraint, to the ripe Merlot of this vintage. The soft, supple tannins and sweet fruit encase an expansive, taut, youthful wine that is balanced in its mouthwatering fruit and maple flavors. Absolutely delicious now, and the underlying subtle yet firm structure provides the foundation for nuanced evolution over the next 10-15 years.

Blackberries, violets and licorice, with hints of lavender. Full body, with phenomenal texture of ultra-fine tannins and subtle and intriguing fruit character. Goes on for minutes. Try in 2020.

The competition between the 2009, 2005 and 2000 La Conseillante will be interesting to follow over the next twenty years. There was more of a selection process at this estate in 2009 than there was in 2000, resulting in a beautiful Pomerol offering notes of mulberries, sweet cherries, spring flowers, raspberries and truffles. The color is a healthy deep plum/ruby/purple and the wine is medium to full-bodied with silky tannins, a broad, layered mouthfeel and wonderful freshness as well as length. This gorgeous, complex, Burgundian-styled Pomerol will be drinkable in 4-6 years and should keep for 30-40. (The 1970 is still alive and that was not nearly as well made as the 2009.)

Bright ruby-red. Knockout perfume of red berries, dark cherry, minerals, flowers, licorice, tobacco and tarragon, complemented by sexy sweet oak. Suave, glossy and silky, but given energy and lift by its cabernet franc component. Captivating vanilla, coconut and spice notes add complexity and lift to the vibrant fruit flavors. No excessive sweetness here. Still a baby but already boasts lovely early balance. Wonderfully smooth Pomerol with terrific finishing lift.

Densely rich, very sweet wine. It has some smoky tannins that give structure, along with a dark core of dry raisin and wood flavors. It has concentration and an opaque texture.

This delivers stunning toasted spice, mocha and black tea aromas, while the core of plum, blackberry and fig flavors is still rather reticent. The long finish is liberally laced with a racy graphite note, while the perfumy accent pervades. This will be a suave head-turner when it rounds into form. Best from 2018 through 2030. -JM

About Winery

Château La Conseillante is amongst the crème de la crème of Pomerol producers. It can trace its history back to 1735 and has been in the hands of the Nicolas family since 1874. La Conseillante's 13 hectares of vineyards are located on a plateau in eastern Pomerol on the boundary with the St-Emilion appellation. Its vineyards border those of L`Evangile, Petit-Village, Vieux Château-Certan and Cheval Blanc. La Conseillante is a blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. The grapes are harvested by hand and are then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is then aged in small oak casks (90% new) for 18-20 months. It is bottled unfiltered.
