2009 Craggy Range Te Kahu
Proprietary Blend: 750ml
$16.99
about this wine:
Te kahu means 'the cloak' in Te Reo Maori and refers to the mist that envelops the Giants Winery in the Tuki Tuki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata.
This proprietary blend of four varieties gives a true expression of the Gimblett Gravels Vineyard. The proportions of the blend change most vintages to reflect conditions of the year and to ensure meeting a certain 'house style'. It is a wine of richness with an abundance of black fruit flavours and a long structured finish complete with dusty tannins of the area.
Chuck Hayward, JJ Buckley, February 2011
80% merlot, 12% cabernet franc, 5% cabernet sauvignon, 3% malbec. Vibrant purple color at the rim. The nose, reserved at first, shows attractive aromas of graphite and rocks with underlying scents of sweet cassis. Medium weighted fruit provides a perfect counterbalance to noticeable tannins and the structured, spicy finish that really showcases the rocky soils of the Gimblett Gravels. Whereas the 2008 had a soft core of fruit, this vintage is reminiscent of the excellent 2007 release, which had similar structure. Great aging potential here, this is New World Bordeaux in a bottle and once again, an incredible value.
