There no disputing that this wine is ripe, but its balance and its stunning appointment of well-defined fruit are keen reminders enough that ripe wine, when balanced, can be delicious. This one, in fact, goes beyond being tasty and delivers complexing elements of briary spice and sweet oak that make it a decidedly interesting Zin. It runs into some very evident tannin and fights with a bit of finishing heat, but it still earns high marks for its richness and depth, and it has terrific potential for another four to six years of growth.

(raised in 100% new French oak; 15% alcohol): Opaque purple. A complex, heady bouquet evokes candied dark berries, vanilla and mocha, with a spicy topnote. Lush and expansive, offering gently sweet, oak-spiced cassis and blueberry flavors that gain energy in the glass. In a plush, polished style, finishing with smooth tannins and lingering spiciness.

About Winery

Located in the historic Larkmead winery in Calistoga (the 3rd oldest winery in Napa), Frank Family Vineyards is co-owned by longtime Disney executive Rich Frank, who currently is the Chairman of talent management agency The Firm, and well-known Napa wine producer Koerner Rombauer. Their limited-production, fruit-forward, yet balanced wines have a loyal following that is due both to the popularity of Winemaker Todd Graff's "blockbuster" wines and the convivial tasting room. Rich and Koerner met in the late 1980s in Napa, and in 1992 had the opportunity to purchase Kornell Champagne Cellars at the Larkmead winery. What might be considered by some an unlikely partnership of Hollywood and farming, has proven to be an immensely successful joint venture, melding Koerner's winemaking vision and Rich's keen understanding of a memorable visitor experience, with a shared passion for wines of the highest quality.
