2009 Ornellaia, Tenuta dell' Le Serre Nuove
Proprietary Blend: 750ml

about this wine:
Le Serre Nuove is the `second vin' of Ornellaia. Its composition is decided upon at the moment of the final blending of Ornellaia by choosing the barriques which combine characteristics of youthfulness and suppleness with the structure, balance and intensity typical of the Estate's great terroir. Fruit from the younger vineyards on the Estate usually make up the majority of the blend. Quantities are governed by the vintage and final blending decisions, and can therefore vary from year to year.

Vibrant and youthful purple, almost black in color. Backwards yet pure and concentrated on the nose, offering aromas of sweet black cherry dusted with baking spice and a touch of cola nut. On the palate, lively herbal and pepper notes are just beginning to emerge. But with some air, robust black cherry comes forth, along with Italian aperitivo and roasted coffee. A year or two in the cellar will show this wine at its youthful best, but rest assured it has the framework to evolve beautifully for another 10-12 years.

Lots of dark fruits and spices, with milk chocolate and berries. Hints of currants. Powerful and rich, with great backbone. Why wait?

The 2009 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a gorgeous, fleshy wine that shows the radiant personality of the vintage. Mocha, espresso, raspberry jam and spices are some of the aromas and flavors that flow from this pliant, accessible red. This is all silk and polish. Stylistically, the 2009 is close to the 2007 for its early approachability but appears to have less overall stuffing. It is a gorgeous, rewarding wine to drink now and over the next 8-10 years. Vintage 2009 was a strange year. A dry hot summer led to an early harvest for Merlot, which is typically precocious, but rain in mid-September slowed down the maturation cycle for later-ripening grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2009 the blend is 54% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The 2009 Serre Nuove spent about 15 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. -AG
