Syrah: 750ml

about this wine:

The northern sites of Kalimna and Ebenezer contribute juicy dark berry fruit and rich mocha flavours to the wine while western sites such as Seppeltsfield give Blackwell its muscular, brooding structure.

Chuck Hayward, JJ Buckley, August 2012

Opaque black purple hue with a thin magenta rim. The intense and concentrated bouquet is dominated by Provencal herbs, creamy black fruit, and soft Greek olive. Dense and powerful on entry, with considerable polish and finesse. Black cherry notes mingle with hints of cocoa and tapenade on a mouth-filling framework. Medium-full bodied but never heavy or ponderous, with rich flavors that continue on to a fruit-filled, delicately tannic finish that ends on a whispered note of chocolate. This is a worthy followup to the top selling 2008 with that vintage's impeccable sense of balance if a bit more weight. Simply delicious. Enjoy 2012-2024.

Decanter, May 2012

(Gold Medal - Decanter World Wine Awards) Velvety, mouthfilling style with sweet, ripe black fruits and spicy oak offset by cool coconut, pepper and savoury, flinty notes. Lovely stuff. 5/5 Stars.

Deep purple-crimson; an outstanding vintage for Blackwell, with a wonderful mix of intense black and red berry fruits, licorice and mocha oak; good as the flavours are, so is the tapestry of the texture of the wine, finely worked and balanced.

Plenty of roast coconut oak, blackberry (nip), the perfume of lemon zest and flowers with a surprisingly juicy palate, given the brooding density the nose might suggest - it's more cherries with fresh acidity (not too forced either) and plenty of powdery tannins. You'd think it might cellar pretty well too. Large scale, robust and full-flavoured, but not leaden. An impressive wine within its style.
