Deep in colour and dark in personality, with black fruits, bitter chocolate, inky fruit and toasty oak; the palate is chewy and dense, epic in proportion and very tannic; it appears that this wine has been built for the long haul.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2009 The Eight Iron Shiraz has a youthfully mute nose with notes of kirsch, tar and tree bark over hints of cumin, Indian spices and warm blueberries. Well structured and more expressive in the mouth, it's very full bodied with crisp acid and firm, finely grained tannins, finishing long and savory. Consider drinking it 2013 to 2023+. --Lisa Perotti-Brown

Glass-staining ruby. Pungent, expressive bouquet of cherry compote, singed plum and cassis, complicated by licorice and violet qualities. Big, chewy and broad on the palate, which repeats the cherry and cassis notes and shows a smoky quality. Very rich shiraz with a powerful, floral-dominated finish and very good persistence.

The Eight Iron vineyard is located near the cellar door. Planted in 1960 on shallow grey loam. Raspberry liqueur, pepper, licorice, earth - seems very McLareny. Even, savoury and earthy palate married to sweet red fruit. Like the tannin and the balanced acidity. Length is good - dried herb and earthy pull. Charismatic. --Gary Walsh
