Elegant nose with loads of dark fruit, licorice and crushed chalk. Full-bodied and wonderfully textured on the palate with well-dosed fine tannins and attractive red fruit. Enjoyable long finish. Try in 2015.

Neil Mechanic, JJ Buckley, April 2011

85% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Average age of the vines is 30 years old, planted on a limestone plateau and limestone/clay hillsides. Five coopers are used : 40% Taransaud, 15% Vicard, 15% Saury, 15% Berthomieu and 15% Nadalié. Alcohol at 14.5%. Cranberry and cherry pop out of the glass, followed by aromas of cola, cocoa powder, and soy. Blueberry and kirsch appear on the palate with pepper and cedar spice, framed by olive and licorice, with sage and rosemary picking up on the lingering finish. The mouthfeel is generous and expansive. Drink 2015 to 2020. Michel Rolland consults. Tasted twice.

The 2010 Cap de Faugeres, a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the better sections of the Cotes de Castillon known as Sainte-Colombe, was bottled unfined and unfiltered by consultant Michel Rolland. It tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol and displays kirsch, black currant, licorice and smoky charcoal/barbecue notes. Medium to full-bodied, lush and very sexy already, this sleeper of the vintage is soft enough to be drunk now or can be cellared for up to a decade. Bravo!

Plump and enticing, with a mouthwatering anise note that pulls you in quickly before delivering waves of blueberry, açaí berry and plum fruit, followed by bouncy spice and floral notes that add lift and length to the finish. Drink now through 2015. -JM

About Winery

Chateau Faugeres is situated on the sunny slopes of the Dordogne valley, 6 KM east of Saint-Emillion, in one of the most beautiful winegrowing sites tn the Bordeaux region. The city of Saint-Emilion and its environs were added to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 1999. Before being acquired by Silvio Denz in April 2005, Chateau Faugeres had been in the ownership of the Pierre-Bernard Guisez family since 1823. The Vineyards, covering approximately 80 hectares, surround an 18th-century carthsian monastery and are divided between two AOCs: Saint-Emillion (49 hectares) and Cotes de Castillon (31 hectares). After 18 years devoted to the renaissance of Chateau Faugeres, their objective remains the same: to go even further in terms of quality.
