about this wine:
As I have written many times, all of these wines are produced from rigidly cultivated, bio-dynamically managed vineyards. That has been the rule since Michel Chapoutier first took over this firm in the late 1980s. Now, with over 20 years of biodynamic viticulture under his belt, Chapoutier remains committed to this rather radical style of organic farming. He believes the effect is to reduce rot in damp, rainy vintages. Moreover, he has observed that after 10 to 15 years of biodynamic farming, the natural acids tend to be more vivid and the overall pH of the soils (as well as the wines) has dropped. Controversial, outspoken and brutally candid, Chapoutier, who suffers no fools, continues to admirably produce wines that are among the finest in the world and potentially the longest lived. Refusing to acidify, chaptalize, or touch the wines in any way, he clearly wants every wine to capture the very essence of its terroir and vintage personality. In this, he succeeds remarkably.

Sedimentary soil at the base of the Hermitage hill. Very dark purple indeed. Dense and magnificent, and juicy. Sweeter than so many Hermitages. Explosive but not too alcoholic. Very exciting! Supple and yet intense and dense. Energy. Long. This may not be the longest-lived Chapoutier Ermitage but it's lovely!

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2012
From the lower slopes of this rocky dome composed primarily of decomposed granite, with east, southeast, and southern exposures, the 2010 Ermitage Les Greffieux (343 cases produced) exhibits a black/purple color along with copious notes of graphite, blackberries, charcoal, pen ink and black fruits. With a layered, full-bodied mouthfeel, a pure, intense personality, and noticeable tannins in the finish, it appears set for a long evolution. Give it another 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades or more. -Robert Parker

Vivid purple. Mineral- and smoke-accented blackberry and blueberry on the intensely perfumed nose and in the mouth. Lush but energetic, with a peppery nuance adding bite and a sexy floral note building in the glass. Gains weight and structure with air and finishes with outstanding power and focus, on a lingering candied violet note. The most mineral-driven of this year's set of Ermitage bottlings from Chapoutier, and in need of patience. 94+
