80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. Typical of this part of the appellation, the northfacing, sloping vineyards consist of 44-year-old vines planted to a mix of clay and limestone soils. Yields were 15 hls/ha before and an extremely low 12 hls/ha after saignée and selection. Aged in 75% new oak with the remainder in one-wine-old barrels. 14.6% alcohol. Restrained aromas of dark red cherry develop followed with vanilla and dark roast coffee. This very pretty wine offers a great deal of character and early drinking accessibility. Enjoy over the next 3-8 years while other 2010s are quietly asleep in the cellar. Stéphane Derenoncourt consults. Tasted twice.

Warm fruity nose with dark plums, some orange zest and violets. Very juicy and vibrant fruit on the palate with good depth and structure. Long and focused with ripe finely textured tannins. Already very enjoyable to drink, but tannins will integrate further over the next two years.

The yields in 2010 were virtually nothing - a mere 12 hectoliters per hectare - and the wine, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc is a big, powerful, full-bodied, rich wine that in many ways reflects the generous cuisine of this famous bistro. Full-bodied, with a dense opaque/purple color and notes of creosote, truffle, blackberry and black raspberry, the wine also has a floral note and hints of crushed rock, giving it a certain minerality. The precision of the 2010 is there because of good acidity. Forget this dense, back-strapping, intense wine for 4-5 years and drink it over the following two decades. It tips the scales at 14.7 % natural alcohol.

This has a thick texture, with layers of mocha and cocoa holding sway over extracted boysenberry and blackberry fruit. The dark, plum skin-framed finish relies on power more than guile, with more breadth than length in the end. Best from 2014 through 2018. -JM
