about this wine:

"A beautiful svelte nose : jammy cherry toasty fruit. Still much too closed but with masses of powerful blackcherry. Sweet & pure. Well-integrated tannins...second wine of Leoville Las Cases in 1996 offers a sumptuous, rich bouquet, an intense dark color, and great balance. The oldest second wine from Bordeaux, it is worthy of a Grand Cru Classé..Such is the greatness of Léoville-Las Cases in 1996 that this second wine presents more as a Grand Vin. Complex and multi-faceted, it is excellent now but will improve further...Red, Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, 12.5% alcohol"

75% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot, 8% cabernet franc. 37% new oak barrels. 13.6% alcohol. Yields were a meager 36.7 hl/ha. Harvest was between Sep 28 and Oct 13. Quite complex and nicely perfumed ,the nose displays blackberry and plum supported by prominent aromas of earth, wild mushrooms and just a touch of minerality. Fine tannins offer nice structure to the wine and carry the fruit through a long, lingering finish. If everything remains in balance over time, this could develop into a real winner. Best after 2018.

This shows beautiful aromas of flowers, raspberries and blackberries that follow through to a full body with ultra silky tannins and a long, long finish. It lasts for minutes. Best in 2018 or later.

Clos du Marquis was produced from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. Interestingly, this wine represents the same portion of the harvest as Leoville Las Cases, 36.7%. Chewy, boysenberry and cassis flavors couple with powerful but tannins and a strong, fresh, cassis filled finish.

The Clos du Marquis demands some coaxing from the glass but it is worth persevering: blackberry, oyster shell, a hint of seaweed - a complex bouquet that entices you in. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh black fruit on the entry. It feels supple in the mouth, beautifully balanced towards the finish with dark cherries and plum lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent.

With the alcohol hitting 13.6% in a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, this wine displays plenty of sweet kirsch, licorice and black currant fruit in a classy, seductive style, with medium to full body, soft but abundant tannins and a long finish. It does indeed possess the elegance and finesse of its bigger sibling, Leoville Las Cases. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

A great wine, packed with black currant fruits, sweet tannins and beautiful acidity. Made by the team at Léoville las Cases, this wine reveals an elegant, restrained structure, ripe and delicious fruit and a darker, tighter texture for aging. -R.V.

This has a lush edge, with seamlessly layered blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry fruit, along with a racy graphite edge and a back end of coffee and bittersweet ganache notes. A solid tug of iron is buried on the finish. Best from 2015 through 2030. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. -JM
