Jancis Robinson, April 2011

Made every year except 2008 and 1997-1999 inclusive. Not a special parcel. For Semillon, certain berries carefully selected at the rate of one basket filled per hour - in the middle of the vintage, not successive tries. The Sauvignon Blanc fruit for L'Extravagant comes from special low-yielding parcels. Usually the fruit comes from the second trie. Very sweet and unctuous. There is also freshness and confidence here, and lots of structure. Very pure and lively. Doisy-Daëne is about _21 a bottle, L'Extravagant about _120-ish. RS 212 g/l, TA 4.2 g/l. 18 out of 20

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2011

With 12.2% alcohol and 212 gms residual sugar, the L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daene consists of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillion. It has a very taut, controlled bouquet that (pardon the expression) is less extravagant than recent vintages, but is beautifully defined with touches of kiwi fruit, green apple and limestone. The palate is mellifluous on the entry, struck through with brilliant acidity, lending it such tension and freshness that is in tune with the vintage. Denis hopes to have nine barrels of this fabulous Barsac. -Neal Martin

Offers lots of sweet botrytis character, with graham, heather honey, fig and glazed pear notes, followed by an unctuous finish. Mouthfilling, with some serious power in reserve. The most backward 2010 Sauternes I've tasted so far. -JM

About Winery

The three Doisy vineyards of Barsac, Daene, Vedrines, and Dubroca, all stem from a single estate whose history is not well documented. The earliest records of Doisy come from the 18th century and they describe an estate south of Chateau Coutet owned by the Vedrines family. Though its early history is elusive, by the early 19th century the estate was recognized as one of the most prominent vineyards in Barsac. At some point in the 19th century, the single vineyard was divided by mandates of Napoleonic law. The largest portion of the vineyard stayed with the Vedrines family.  The second smaller portion was acquired by the Faux family which subsequently began the era Doisy-Dubroca, which was then acquired by the Daene family to produce Chateau Doisy Daene. The vineyards has switched hands a few times through the generations, but the Doisy Daene has consistently produced amazing wines that have captured the attention of wine connoisseurs the world over.

The Doisy Daene is very typical of the Barsac: a mix of red sand and clay with solid limestone bedrock and fossilized shellfish. The vines are largely vieilles vignes, although parts of the vineyard were intensively replanted in the 1940s and 1950s. The vineyard's 15.9 hectares are planted with extensive amounts of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle.
