80% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot. The wine was launched by Cos d'Estournel in the 2003 vintage, produced from grapes grown on gravelly, rolling hillside vineyards along the Gironde River estuary, well north of St Estephe. Complex and evolved, the perfumed nose displays fresh spring flowers leading to intense black and blue fruit and followed by tar, fresh turned earth, and crushed pebbles. This modern styled wine offers plus concentration of blackberry and boysenberry, brambly and spicy. The alluring texture shows exceptional lushness for the vintage with integrated, supple tannins.

Lovely lifted nose of rose petals and plums follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Ultra-fine tannins. Delicious now but better in 2016.

80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. From the same three vineyard blocks as always but Jean-Guillaume Prats admitted that it has taken his team some time to fully understand how they react to different weather conditions. Very deep crimson purple. Attractive freshness on the nose. Round at first though quite sculpted later on the palate. Clean and fresh with no hint of overripeness. And only the tiniest hint of green. Dry finish - very complete and nicely done. Brisk and clean.

The La Goulee is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot and it quite reticent on the nose at first but opening gradually with blackberry, cedar and black plum, struck through with a hint of graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, quite Margaux like and floral with a pretty but taut finish. This should mellow nicely by the time of bottling. Drink 2012-

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, this wine displays an opaque ruby/purple color and notes of damp earth, forest floor, white chocolate, sweet black currants and spice box. The wine is round, full-bodied and luscious, with 14.7% natural alcohol. Although meant for early consumption, it should easily last up to a decade or more. -Robert Parker

Very solid, with a graphite spine that drives through the core of dark plum, currant and blackberry fruit. The finish lets the anise and violet notes play out, retaining some grip. Drink now through 2019. -JM
