2010 La Vieille Cure Bordeaux Blend
Bordeaux Blend: 1500ml
about this wine:
Land: A plateau of limestone; bordering slopes with chalk and clay soils.
Grapes:74% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Bordeaux Right Bank, Appellation: Fronsac
Classification: The wines produced at Chateau la Vieille Cure are, as has been the tradition for centuries, fine wines meant for careful consumption. While they can be enjoyed young, they are best appreciated at 4 years of age and more. 10 years is normal, and 15 or even 20 years are not exceptional. With a perfect balance of fruit, aromas and tannins, they are made to be appreciated with meals but can be enjoyed at any time.

Muscular and also sweet with a lovely completeness that is rare in St-Émilion and Pomerol. Slightly dry finish but a good wine! Should be GV.

75% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. One-third new oak. Soil structure of a limestone bed with chalky-clay topsoil provided excellent drainage, and this site rivals some of the great St. Emilion estates. Black and blue fruit dominate the nose along with cocoa powder, soy and licorice. Liquored cassis on the palate is dense at the core, but with a contrast of silky edges. All cylinders are firing here, and though this wine is always a big winner at JJ Buckley, the 2010 over performs. Those who prefer a bold `New World' Bordelaise effort can enjoy this upon release, but it will age nicely for another 15 years.

Always one of the ripest and most hedonistic of the Fronsacs, this wine again delivers the goods. Dense ruby/purple, with loads of black currant and licorice-infused black raspberry fruit, this wine has stunning density, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and impressive purity, texture and length. The high Merlot content always seems to ensure a wine that has accessibility young, but also has the potential to easily last for a decade or more. This is once again a major sleeper of the vintage.
A stunningly opulent, even voluptuous style of wine from proprietor Colin Ferenbach (an American, of all things!), this blend of 75% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon emerges from 45 acres of hillside vineyards in Fronsac.

This takes a modern approach, with a noticeable dose of dark, roasted espresso and chocolate up front, but remains grounded in the appellation's textbook racy chalk and charcoal profile. The core of lush fig, plum and blackberry fruit sits in reserve, and the finish is polished and long. Impressive. Best from 2015 through 2025. -JM
