Cory Gowan, JJ Buckley, April 2011

70% merlot and 30% cabernet franc. Aged for 18-20 in new French oak barrels. Yields are kept purposely tiny, made from separate small parcels of Fombrauge that Bernard Magrez deems to be part of his 'cru d'exception.' The grapes are destemmed by hand, all processed by gravity. The 2010 Magrez-Fombrauge is simply fabulous with concentrated aromas of dark blue and black berries on the nose leading to an opulent liqueur that is not be missed. On the mouth it is smooth, rich, and full of minerals and fruit. But it is also tightly wound, revealing its structure only at the end. A true cellar candidate and a top wine from St. Emilion.

Lots of ripe fruit and new wood in this young wine. It's full-bodied, with super integrated tannins and a long finish. Very Californian in style yet remains fresh and clean at the finish like Bordeaux -- as always. Opulent. Better in 2018.

Jancis Robinson, April 2011

Fresh and intriguing on the nose. Vital and vibrant and very sweet - without tannic excess though tannin certainly lurks here. A very pretty wine with real potential. 17 out of 20

With its inky, jet black color, oak, licorice, chocolate, black cherry and blackberry aromas abound. Mouth coating, packed and stacked with ripe, juicy, licorice filled fruit, this rich pure wine stains your palate with layers of licorice, chocolate and dark plums.

Dense purple, with notes of blackberry, white chocolate, mulberry and toasty oak, this is a full-bodied, massive, rich, thick and unctuously textured wine with outstanding purity, richness and headiness. Of course, there's always criticism that wines like this don't age, but I own the 2000, and it is still an infant at 13 years of age, so I don't think that's an issue. This wine needs a good 5-6 years of cellaring and should keep for 20-25 years at the minimum. This tiny garagiste estate has produced a wine from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from what is considered the best parcel of the larger Fombrauge vineyard, where the harvest occurred in mid-October. There are only about 500-600 cases of it. It is clearly a modern, rather internationally styled wine, but it is impeccably well-made. --Robert Parker
