After the brilliance of the Champans I wasn't sure if the Clos des Ducs could surpass it but it did if only just. A sublimely pure and refined nose of pure extract of red pinot fruit also adds a gorgeous array of stone, earth, rose petal and spice hints. The delicious, detailed and mineral-driven flavors possess a palpable sense of energy as well as almost painful intensity on the impeccably well-balanced and driving finish that is an exercise in grace and harmony. It's not yet clear whether this will go down as one of the all-time great vintages for Clos des Ducs but it will certainly be among them as this is simply terrific. ♥ - Comments: Don't miss! Transparent crimson. Very complex - can you smell medieval history in here? There is so much going on in this glass already! Both richness and delicacy. Then on the palate great firmness. Wait and wait - or perhaps just smell and smell... 18.5/20

The 2010 Volnay Clos des Ducs is a wonderfully complete wine. Layers of sculpted, chiseled fruit flow gracefully as the Clos des Ducs opens up in the glass. Dark red cherries, licorice, spices and cedar are given an attractive lift by the expressive floral notes that are woven throughout. This is a beautifully centered, poised wine that impresses for its purity and focus. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.

Good bright red, a bit less saturated than the Champans. A whiff of smoky reduction dissipates to reveal aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry, herbs and underbrush. Thick, creamy and highly concentrated, conveying an impression of solidity but with outstanding lift too. A seriously tannic and deep Volnay with a big structure and outstanding length. This one calls for a decade or more of cellaring. 94+
