Opaque core with a deep purple rim. Powerful and sweet aromas of blackberry liqueur, melted licorice, plum, and milk chocolate, plus a touch of black pepper and subtle violet notes. Ripe, opulent, and full-bodied, this is loaded with savory notes of grilled meat and herbs, licorice, roasted black fig, black cherry, loamy earth, and tar. Massive, this is supported by persistent, slightly chalky tannins and just enough bright acidity to maintain a fresh note. Tightly coiled now, this needs 2-3 more years in bottle to soften up, then should drink nicely for a decade or more.

Very aromatic in dry, rather leafy idiom atypical for Châteauneuf. Very well-managed tannins which are here in abundance. Juicy fruit. Rather splendid peacock’s tail finish. 17/20

A knockout traditional cuvee, the 2010 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, and 5% Syrah that is aged half in tank and half in barrel. It is beautifully perfumed and complex on the nose, with aromas of incense, spiced meats, flowers, and raspberry and blackberry liqueur-like aromas all souring from the glass. This is followed up by a full-bodied, structured, and tannic wine that has a rock solid core of fruit, loads of texture, and fantastic focus, detail, and length on the finish. Give bottles 2-3 years in the cellar, and then enjoy over the following decade.

The best value from this estate is the sensational 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape, a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre from 50-year-old vines aged in concrete tank as well as old wood foudres. Copious aromas of garrigue, seaweed, ground pepper, creme de cassis and kirsch jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied, multidimensional, rich, pure 2010. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

Bright purple. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, cherry and smoky herbs. Picks up a subtle gamy nuance with air, along with a suave lavender pastille quality. Fine-grained tannins give grip to a sweet, persistent finish, which echoes the smoky note.

This is dark but racy and driven, with a gorgeous Turkish coffee note giving way to flavors of roasted fig, blackberry paste and baker's chocolate. Polished and seamless through the finish, with a tarry echo adding grip and length. Best from 2014 through 2027. -J.M.
