2010 Morey, Thomas Santenay Vieilles Vignes Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir: 750ml
$33.99

about this wine:
This plot enjoys an excellent exposure, lying as it does immediately
below the famous "Clos de Tavannes", jewel in the crown of Santenay's
1er crus.
History
Our Santenay
Vieilles Vignes comes from vines in the named plot "Prorons dessus",
some of which were planted in the late fifties. The Santenay village
appellation comprises 180 ha of vines spread among various slopes
surrounding the village at altitudes ranging from 220 to 400 metres. The
soils, derived from Middle Jurassic rocks, vary naturally from one
terroir to another. These stony brown limestone soils, resemble those of
the Côte de Nuits which begin to reappear south of Chassagne-Montrachet
and are the norm at Santenay.
Terroir
The
soil on this gently-sloping site is brown limestone, very light, rather
shallow and highly favourable to vine-growing.
Tasting
This
enjoyable cuvée has less complexity than a 1er cru, a rather dense ruby
hue, and aromas of strawberries and cherries which recur in the mouth
and are set off by perceptible but discreet tannins which testify to
regular and complete ripening.
A quaffable wine which can be enjoyed
from its third year but can still surprise after several more years'
keeping.
About Winery
Thomas Morey belongs
to the tenth generation of this Chassagne family. He grew up familiar
with his grandparents' holding and then worked for 12 years on that of
his parents. Then, in 2006, he decided to set up his own domaine
together with his wife Sylvie. Thus the Thomas Morey domaine put its
name to its first vintage in 2007.
The history of the
Morey family in Chassagne-Montrachet dates back to the middle of the
17th century. Claude Morey, a native of Paris l'Hôpital, a small commune
of Saône-et-Loire lying some ten kilometers from Chassagne-Montrachet,
arrived in the village in 1643. He and his numerous descendants worked
in the vineyards or as coopers. It wasn't until the end of the 19th
century that vine-growing became their principal activity.
Since then,
generation has followed generation, acquiring by inheritance or purchase
plots of vine-growing or fallow land and passing these on to their
descendants. Today, the domaine has evolved considerably from what it
was in the days of Thomas Morey's grandparents.
