Andy Frieden, JJ Buckley, April 2011

55% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 10% cabernet franc. 35 year old vines planted to Gunzian gravel atop a subsoil of clay and limestone, with 40-42hl/ha yields. Aging for an estimated 16 months in 33% new oak barrels and 32% one-wine old barrels, the rest in tank. The perfumed nose displays blackberry and mocha spice and a touch of loamy soil. Rather modernly styled, the palate features richly concentrated black and blue fruit, silky and glycerol, with an underlying expression of brambly fruit and a big soil component. Tannins are a bit grippy but they balance the ultra ripe boysenberry and blackberry fruit. Hubert de Bouard of Angelus consults.

Aromas of plums and minerals with hints of flowers follow through to a full body with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Spicy. Delicious. Better in 2016.

I believe this is the first Serilhan vintage to boast Hubert de Bouard as the winemaking consultant. The strongest effort I have tasted from this 60-acre estate, it is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and hit 14% natural alcohol. A soft, round, generous, opaque plum-colored wine, it offers abundant notes of black cherries and black currants intermixed with hints of herbs and earth. Drink this sleeper of the vintage over the next 10-15 years.

This firmly tannic wine, characteristic of Saint-Estèphe, is very dry. Underneath the dryness, there is a delicious, opulent juiciness that brings out black currant and plum flavors. It’s obviously a wine for the long haul; keep for at least six years.

The dark currant and blackberry fruit is offset by a lively, racy, chalky spine and mouthwatering notes of savory and violet. Stays firm through the finish, with a charcoal coating and a pebbly finish. Best from 2015 through 2024. -JM
