Chuck Hayward, JJ Buckley, April 2011

The house style of elegance and finesse comes through once again and is perfectly poised for success in a year of ripe wines. There are hints of herbal complexity in the subtle aromas. A touch simple now but with more power than 2009, the mid-palate has some generous fruit as the wine ends with some significant and powerful tannins. Will be best from 2026-2030.

2010: The dense ruby/purple-hued 2010 possesses copious notes of graphite, blueberries and black raspberry liqueur intermixed with subtle smoky oak. A more structured effort than other recent vintages, deep, pure, full-bodied and impressive, this property has regained its momentum over the last 4-5 years, and their 2010 is another powerful yet elegant effort that admirably translates its terroir. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the following two decades.

A very toasty but integrated style, with warm espresso and mocha leading the way for a really supple palate of black currant, plum sauce and cassis flavors. The toast holds a slight lead on the finish, leaving a slightly cedary dusting, but this is lengthy and dense enough to hold on while it melds in the cellar. Best from 2014 through 2024. -JM

About Winery

Chateau l'Arrosee was first listed in Le Feret among the Saint-Emilion premiers crus in 1868, when it belonged to Pierre Magne, Minister to Napoleon III. The outstanding situation could have ranked it among the Premiers Grands Crus Classes at the time of the 1955 classification. However it was ranked as a Grands Crus Classes as, at the time, it had neither vinification nor ageing facilities and the harvest was sold to the co-operative. It was no until 1956 that Francois Rodhain made a determined effort to vinify and age the wine at the chateau. Since August 2002, Chateau l'Arrosee has been run by the enthusiastic new proprietors, Roger and Jean-Philippe Caille. This new phase is undoubtedly the starting point for the rebirth of this Saint-Emilion Grand Cru.
