75% merlot, 15% cabernet franc, and 10% cabernet sauvignon. From a 1.33-hectare vineyard (the smallest grand cru classé in the appellation) planted to a mix of clay and limestone soils atop the limestone plateau. Average age of the vines is 34 years; yields were 34 hls/ha. The nose is a bit closed at this stage before revealing gentle, elegant aromas of red flowers, vanilla, and black fruits aromas and even a hint of citrus. This expands into a concentrated, purely powerful wine on the palate, with big flavors of blue and black fruits, blackberry liqueur, and an expansive, long finish with fine grained tannins. This should age quite well, but is already pretty delicious.

Aromas of very ripe fruit and walnuts follow through to a full body, with a dense palate and lots of ripe fruit and smoky wood. Lots of new barrels. Needs time to resolve the chewy tannins and new wood. Better in 2016.

Clos St. Martin, the smallest classified wine in the Bordeaux appellation comes from a 1.33-hectare vineyard. Planted to 7,000 vines/ha, with an average age of 31 years. The terroir is planted on clay and limestone soils over the limestone plateau. Smoke, mineral, licorice, oak, and jammy berry scents open to a supple, ripe, silky textured concentrated wine ends with a long fresh, black cherry, spice and licorice finish.

The Clos Saint Martin is very pure and delineated on the nose the blossoms with Morello cherry, vanilla and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very cohesive with good mineralité, beautifully defined on the finish. This is a lovely Saint Emilion: polished and poised.

This wine has the classic licorice, lavender, and kirsch notes that one finds frequently in a very ripe vintage from the southern Rhone. However, the tannic structure associated with Bordeaux comes through on the palate of this dense, full-bodied wine. There is elegance combined with intensity, richness, purity and splendid concentration in its full-bodied texture. This is a beauty and a return to form for this tiny little gem of a property. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. Once again, this wine has a Lafleur/Pomerol-ish quality to it. One of the tiniest vineyards in St.-Emilion, located just outside the village's stone walls, next to, of all things, a cemetery, Clos Saint-Martin consists of a mere 3.2 or so acres. Proprietor Sophie Fourcade utilizes the services of Michel Rolland for harvesting and winemaking decisions. The blend in the 2010 is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, with yields at 34 hectoliters per hectare and a finished alcohol of 14.5%. --Robert Parker
