This has a lovely balance with dark fruits, cherries and fresh acidity. Full and refined, with lovely fruit. Lovely acidity.

Gérard Perse selection. Very deep crimson. Intense yet lively. Thick and sweet - quite a different build from most wines. Bit tough on the end. Lacks a bit of fluidity but certainly very ambitious. Cool on the finish, but long. Tasted 6 Apr: Very sweet on the nose. Super flattering with a little medicinal undertow. Quite inky on the finish but there is certainly a lot packed in here.

80% merlot, 10% cabernet franc, 10% cabernet sauvignon. From an 8.5 hectare vineyard on clay and limestone plateau, the vines at this property are 40 years. Yields were just 25 hls/ha. Aged in 60% new French oak and 40% one-wine-old barrels. Intense herb, soy and licorice nose indicates earth and concentration. A generous entry and mid-palate of blackberry injected with an abundance of sweet black licorice. Firm and linear tannins will make this a great early drinker for those who favor luscious fruit and spice. Drink 2013 to 2023. Tasted twice.

One of the bigger, more tannic and powerful wines of the vintage, although it is only 14.4% alcohol, which puts it well below some of the blockbusters in the Cotes de Castillon, this wine exhibits wonderfully pure black raspberry, black cherry and graphite notes intermixed with hints of cedar and licorice, in a medium to full-bodied, slightly softer and less extracted style than usual. This is another sleeper of the vintage that should drink nicely for up to a decade.

Solidly built, with thickly layered fig, blueberry and açaí berry flavors pumping along, supported by still-chewy ganache and tobacco notes. An accent of roasted apple wood drives the finish. The pieces are in place, but this needs to be tamed in the cellar. Best from 2015 through 2023. -JM
