Inky purple, almost black in the glass.Notes of black raspberry and huckleberry mix with aromas of truffle and cinnamon on a savory, inviting nose. With big, imposing tannins, this shows excellent length, but will need close to a decade before coming into balance and approachability. Lay it down and then enjoy from 2020-2050.

With yields of 40 hectoliters per hectare, the property produced a wine blending 61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot with the remainder evenly split between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine reached 13.8% alcohol in 2010, which is slightly higher than they achieved in 2009. Ruby colored, with scents of cassis, oak and gravel, this full bodied, brawny, beefy, traditional and tannic wine has some dryness in the finish.

Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. I like this Gruaud, as banal as that sounds. It is just a Saint Julien that goes out to give pleasure. The Merlot component really comes through on the expressive bouquet with red cherries, wild strawberry, tobacco and bay leaf. The palate is well balanced with quite a sinewy entry. There are layers of ripe black fruit laced with white pepper and mineral, whilst the finish is focused and long. Could this become a modern day 1982? I hope so, as there could be no higher complement.

Dark garnet/plum/purple, with loads of spice, earth, underbrush, red and black currants, licorice, and even a hint of Provencal garrigue, this full-bodied, tannic, masculine style of St.-Julien needs 5-6 years of cellaring, but is full, beefy, rich and impressively endowed. There are plenty of firm tannins in the background of this blockbuster wine, which has been built for the long haul. This is one 2010 where patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040. 93+

For anybody looking for classic Bordeaux, this is the bottle to seek. "Classic" here means a wine with a tannic structure that also relies on a black currant flavor, with acidity providing freshness but not losing any concentration or aging potential. Keep for many years.

About Winery

Chateau Gruaud Larose is inland from Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou, Beychevelle, and Branaire-Ducru in the commune of St. Julien. (Appellation Saint Julien Controlée) 189 acres producing 32,000 cases. Classification: Second growth. Grape variety: 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. Average age of the vines - 40 years. Vinification and aging: The wine is fermented in stainless steel vats, and aged in oak barrels for 20-22 months, renewed annually in thirds. In 1757, Mr. Gruaud grouped a number of small vineyards together to form one large one, under his name. Eventually a descendant of the first owner took over the property. His name was Larose, and he immediately linked his name to the estate, bought by Mr. Desire Cordier in 1915. Managed under the direction of Mr. Georges Pauly, the highly respected director of Domaines Cordier, Gruaud Larose is one of St. Julien's most popular wines. Its large production has a quality that is consistently very high. One of the most continuously successful wines produced in Bordeaux, regardless of vintage."
