2010 Ken Wright Cellars Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard
Pinot Noir: 750ml
$48.99
about this wine:
This site is in the Yamhill-Carlton District just west of the Chehalem Valley. Our fruit is sourced from three small blocks, two of which are planted to the Pommard clone, with the third to Wadenswil. Soils are primarily of the Goodin and Melbourne type which are sedimentary in origin. The three blocks range in elevation from 450 to 600 feet and were originally planted in 1989. Trellis style is vertical shoot positioning. The wine from this vineyard has a complex array of aromas and flavors including black and red fruits, particularly blueberry, spice and earth. Approximately 725 cases are produced. The vineyard is owned by Dick and Deirdre Shea.

Bergamot, Indian spice, rose petal, kirsch cherry and iodine kick off this terroir-driven nose. Still extremely young and taut, Ken Wright's Pinot from Shea Vineyard is packed to the brim. On the palate, the primary fruit of red and black cherry gains momentum, yet always encased in a seamless, mineral-driven acidity. Ken Wright is famous for his vineyard-driven Pinots, and his Shea from the 2010 vintage-quickly gaining clout as a top Pinot vintage in Oregon-is case in point. The minerality integrates beautifully with the robust fruit, and this will be an exciting wine to follow over the coming years. In fact, this is one of the most complex Oregon Pinots that I have tasted, and at this young age, it is constantly evolving in the glass, offering brief snapshots of what it will become. To enjoy today, open and decant at least an hour before serving.

The Shea is a bit of an anomaly at 13.7% in a vintage where the other Ken Wright Pinots float around the 12-12.5% mark. Not surprisingly, the fruit is thicker and the midpalate more full and broad, with pleasing cherry-berry flavors framed in chocolaty oak... - P.G.
