Extremely complex with black olives, violets and brown sugar. Superb nose. Full body with a impressive density and richness. The quality of the tannins is so very stunning, giving a wonderful texture. Fresh and bright. Such length. Try in 2017.

Very dark crimson indeed. Very very sweet. Sweet and rich and full and extremely lush and flattering. Very smart and long and rich. Purity was the aim. Sweet start but lots of tannin and firmness. A wine I would really relax with. Long and relaxing and a bit like a massage. Their reconstruction aimed to increase the Cabernet Franc. Dry finish but so calming and charming. They have introduced some organic methods in the vineyard and replaced old vines. 14.7% but 3.75 pH. 18 out of 20

With only 31 hecoliters per hectare, yields were low in 2010. From an assemblage of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, Jean-Pascal Vazart confirmed the wine reached a record high for the property at 14.7% alcohol with a pH of 3.75. This unique combination of high alcohol and acidity allows the wine to feel fresh on your palate. Deep in color, fresh flowers, chocolate, black and red plums, black cherry and truffle make a complex perfume. Rich, concentrated, plush with freshness, the wine finishes with creamy chocolate covered dark berries, licorice and plum liqueur. This wine could increase in score as it evolves.

Tasted at the property, the L'Evangile 2010 was an absolute corker in barrel and now in bottle, the nose is a brooding, almost saturnine beast that bides its time and when your back is turned, it unfurls to offer beautiful, very pure dark red cherry fruit laced with dates, blueberry and truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins on the entry. This has immense backbone and focus, every flavour in its right price. There are subtle notes of raspberry, wild strawberry, cedar, white pepper and black truffle, whilst the finish is incredibly powerful, akin to the great vintages of yesteryear. Cellar and long life ahead required. 96+

Another spectacular effort from L'Evangile, the 2010 is a close rival to the 2009 and should be fascinating to compare with that vintage over the next 30 or so years. Stunningly rich and black/purple in color, the 2010 L'Evangile offers up the tell-tale floral note as well as black raspberry jam intermixed with cassis and kirsch. There are also ethereal floral notes and a hint of background oak. The pH is slightly above average (3.7 versus the pH of 4.0 that the 2009 and 2000 possessed). This is a massive, rich, very impressive L'Evangile, and readers should take note of the "+" in my rating, which could certainly push this wine way up there. Remarkably, I was shocked when I learned that this wine was aged in 100% new oak, as the oak is a background element in this blockbuster l'Evangile. Forget it for 3-5 years, and drink it over the following 30-40. 98+

A Pomerol of a different color, relying heavily on dense muscle and dark charcoal notes, with a core of fig, blackberry paste and blueberry reduction waiting in reserve. Very solid through the finish, displaying a thick ganache coating and extra loam, black licorice and dark fig notes rolling through. Best from 2017 through 2037. -JM

About Winery

Chateau l'Evangile is located on the plateau in the commune of Pomerol between Chateau Petrus and Chateau Cheval Blanc... Famous Growth of Pomerol. Even though Pomerol has never been officially rated, Chateau l'Evangile is acknowledged to be one of the finest Chateau in the commune of Pomerol and in all of Bordeaux... 14 hectares ( 35 acres) producing an average of 5,000 cases per year including the second wine... The average age of the vines is 25 years. Chateau l'Evangile has two major soil types. There are the clay soils common to the plateau of Pomerol but also areas of gravel which are very unusual for Pomerol and much more common to the Graves region. The clay produces wines of strength and power while the gravel parts create wines that are more delicate. ..In the earliest times of the estate (up to the mid 1700's), this property was known as Fazilleau. In the mid 1800s the chateau came to prominence under the name Chateau L'Evangile During this rise of fame, L'Evangile was owned by the Chaperon family It stayed in succeeding generations of thier family until the Domaines Baron de Rothschild were brought in as partners. The Rothschild group finally purchased a controlling interest in the property in 1990...All harvesting is done by hand as is required by regulation in the appellation. When the weather allows, the grapes are brought to maximum ripeness. The long hang time before harvest lowers the yeild (about 45 hectolitres per hectare (475 gallons per acre)) but produces wines of great concentration. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in cement talks and lasts for 8-12 days. High value is placed on the extraction of color and tannins from the grapes. After the fermentation, the wines are placed in oak barrels for a period of 20 to 24 months... L'Evangile is known for its highly concentrated wines that have one of the best aging potentials of all the chateaux of Pomerol. These wines are usually quite tannic in thier youth and need a minimum of 5-7 years before opening..
