Alex Shaw, JJ Buckley, April 2011

50% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 10% cabernet franc. 27% aged in new oak barrels, the balance aged in one year-old barrels for 12 months. From 40 year old vines, the vineyards for Lalande Borie are situated between Lagrange and Talbot. Harvested between September 29th and October 14th. Alcohol 13.95%. Dark black fruit emerges on the palate, with notes of cedar, spice, prominent earth and a touch of toast. Very jammy on the palate, the tannins are rather subtle, and there doesn't seem to be quite enough structure for this to be a long-lived wine. More likely, this good value should be consumed young.

Currants and dark fruits with hints of licorice. Full and silky with ripe tannins and berry. Cigar tobacco and berry. Sweet tobacco. This is a wine that shows serious depth of fruit and refined tannins. Better in 2016.

Matured in 30% new oak and bottled in June 2012, the Lalande-Borie needs time in the glass before wakening - earthy and dusty at first, but gaining clarity with each swirl. There are subtle notes of blackberry, bilberry and graphite that are very well defined, the oak enmeshed into the fruit profile. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, generous opening. Cedar-infused brambly red berry fruit occupy the driving seat and there is crisp acidity from start to finish, with just a slight attenuation that should fill out as the wine recovers from bottling. Good potential here, but it deserves an hour decanting.

Another sleeper of the vintage from Bruno Borie, this 2010 is atypically powerful, rich and concentrated, with loads of sweet black currants, mocha and a hint of caramel. Deep, lush, succulent, and fruit-driven, it is a wine to drink in its first 10-12 years of life.

Classic, ripe Saint-Julien with all its richness, tempered with elegance. It is deliciously fruity, packed with blackberry fruit surrounding the structure. -R.V.

Solid, with a very juicy core of lightly mulled plum and blackberry fruit, a polished apple wood note that runs along the edges and a solid, gravel-tinged finish. Sports nice terroir and leaves a mouthwatering feel on the finish. Best from 2015 through 2027. -JM
