ST 90

90 points,

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, September 2012

Medium yellow. Peach, spices, menthol and hazelnut on the nose. Tight stone fruit flavors are given a penetrating quality by strong acidity, and lifted by hints of menthol and white pepper. An uncompromising but dense and tactile village wine, and not at all a sweet style of Meursault. Serious stuff.

About Winery

Pascal Marchand, formerly of Domaine Comte Armand and Domaine de la Vougeraie, has founded his own négociant operation and is now producing reds and whites that he both vinifies as well as purchases. Marchand noted that he had just acquired space in the old Thomas Moillard cellars and will be vinifying more of his range beginning in 2011. He also explained that relative to his approach at Armand and Vougeraie, he's using more of an infusion method as opposed to looking for higher levels of extraction. New wood is prominent as the 1ers carry about 50% and the grands crus 100%. I was impressed by what I tasted and the total range is even larger than what is reflected by the notes. Moreover, the range of grands crus is more than admirable, especially to have Musigny as a négociant wine, which is relatively rare these days.
