about this wine:
At the southern extremity of the Côte de Beaune and encroaching on the
department of Saône-et-Loire, the Maranges AOC embraces the communes of
Cheilly-les-Maranges, Dezize-les-Maranges and Sampigny-les-Maranges.
History
This
little-known and recently-created appellation (1989) includes 7 1er cru
climats. It offers a range of likeable wines at attractive prices.
Terroir
The
"Fussière" climat covers an area of almost 35 ha, which makes it the
most extensive of the appellation. It has a southerly exposure and lies
mainly on a hill-slope where the altitude ranges from 290 to 350 metres
and there are numerous springs. The soil is whitish, stony and overlies
blue marl.
Tasting
Production is
mainly of red wines, deeply coloured - almost black - and with a
surprising fruit which blends aromas of black fruits and stone-fruits.
These wines, usually very chewy, have good keeping properties. While I
am in favour of a rather gentle vinification in order not to extract too
much tannin, I suggest that these wines should be drunk in their first
eight years.
About Winery
Thomas Morey belongs
to the tenth generation of this Chassagne family. He grew up familiar
with his grandparents' holding and then worked for 12 years on that of
his parents. Then, in 2006, he decided to set up his own domaine
together with his wife Sylvie. Thus the Thomas Morey domaine put its
name to its first vintage in 2007.
The history of the
Morey family in Chassagne-Montrachet dates back to the middle of the
17th century. Claude Morey, a native of Paris l'Hôpital, a small commune
of Saône-et-Loire lying some ten kilometers from Chassagne-Montrachet,
arrived in the village in 1643. He and his numerous descendants worked
in the vineyards or as coopers. It wasn't until the end of the 19th
century that vine-growing became their principal activity.
Since then,
generation has followed generation, acquiring by inheritance or purchase
plots of vine-growing or fallow land and passing these on to their
descendants. Today, the domaine has evolved considerably from what it
was in the days of Thomas Morey's grandparents.
