50% merlot and 50% cabernet sauvignon. Aged for 12 months in 35% new oak barrels. Located in the more urban area of Pessac, on the outskirts of Bordeaux just north of Chateau Pape-Clement, Picque Caillou makes wine from 21 hectares. As "caillou" means "pebble" in French, the soil here is stony gravel. This has a high-toned nose of blackberry fruit, tons of spice, a big dollop of black licorice and a touch of smoke. Complex in the mouth with spice, saline and minerality, it is an impressive red from this small estate. The finish last for a minute and turns velvety on the tongue. Very alluring.

I like the silky tannins and blueberry character in this wine, with licorice and tar. Full and in balance. Better than 2010.
