about this wine:

From soils of gravel and sand, the wines of Chateau Siran are typical of the Margaux region's great growths. Powerful yet refined, the perfect balance of tannins, fruit and acidity is at all times sought. Wine capable of long ageing, time rewards the palate with caresses of velvet and silk.

Andy Frieden, JJ Buckley, February 2013

47% merlot, 42% cabernet sauvignon, 11% petite verdot. Aged in 30-35% new oak for 12-14 months. The dark purple core leads into a perfume of crushed flowers, cherry, limestone minerality and a touch of exotic Malabar pepper to round out first impressions. A bit closed, this leads into bright cherry and blackberry fruit, with a smooth mid-palate and a mouthwateringly juicy finish. There is a seamless precision to this wine, though it is tightly wound and will need 5 to 7 years of cellaring before it hits its drinking window.

Aromas of licorice with dark berries and blueberries. Full body, with extremely integrated tannins that are polished and beautiful. The texture is just so attractive. This is a vibrant wine. Try after 2017.

A blend of 42% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Petit Verdot, the Chateau Siran '10 seems to mark a change in style for this Margaux cru that tended to be overblown in recent years. This is far more composed on the nose with pepper black fruits that remind me of the Loire. It is as if there is some Cabernet Franc in the blend, but this must be emanating from the Petit Verdot. The palate is medium-bodied with a peppery entry, quite rustic in some ways, a little disjointed. They have certainly gone hell for leather with the Petit Verdot and whilst I don't think it quite made a great Margaux, it has individuality and character. I will be intrigued to taste this after bottling.

2010: This masculine-styled Margaux reveals abundant tannin, some dusty, loamy, earthy notes intermixed with licorice and herbs, medium body, good acidity and 10-12 years of drinkability.

After a low period, Siran has come back in 2010 with this solid, tannic, firm and serious wine. There is plenty of blackberry flavor to flesh out the structure, resulting in a wine for medium-term aging.

This has a plush feel overall, packed with flavors of cocoa, espresso, bay leaf, roasted mesquite, plum sauce and black currant preserves. The slightly dusty structure is well-embedded in the fruit, offering a tug of earth at the very end and leaving a mouthwatering impression. Best from 2014 through 2025. -JM

About Winery

In 1859 the château became the property of the Miailhe family of wine professionals. The vineyards of the estate, situated on the plateau of Labarde in the Margaux appellation, are entirely surrounded by classed growth of 1855. Several authorities and critics have opined that had the wines of Siran been presented for classification in the 1855 exhibit, Siran would have made into the precious classification.

Subsequently, since the mid 19th century, the family's descendents followed one another in full respect of the family tradition. In 2007, the family's fifth generation, represented by Edouard Miailhe, become involved in the management of the estate, following its parents Brigitte and William-Alain Miailhe.

Château Siran is one of the rare Bordeaux châteaux to belong to the same family for nearly 150 years.
