Planted to 80% merlot, 20% cabernet franc. This 6.5-hectare estate sits on the northwest side of the top of the St. Emilion plateau, overlooking the slope that becomes the Pomerol shelf. Average vine age is 35-40 years, planted in clay top soil and classic St. Emilion limestone underneath. Fresh, perfectly ripe, red fruit - raspberry, strawberry, plums - lead the nose and are the core of the wine on the palate. A citrus freshness-typical of these limestone soils-adds lift to the red fruits and to the wine itself. Beyond the subtleties of the fruit, this wine is all about balance and texture, perfectly poised and all silk. A genuine expression of 2011 and certainly one of the successes of the vintage in St. Emilion. This will need 5 years after release to unwind, and will plateau between 2025-2030. Nicholas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt consult.

What a beautiful nose of forest floor, dark fruits, sweet tobacco, and blackberries. Full body, with firm and silky tannins and a minerally refined finish. Very polished and well made.

78% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc. Inky cherry. Gorgeously ripe but fresh damsons as well as fresher small dark berries. So perfumed even though there is some chocolatey oak in there too. Bright, deep and long but full of life and intensity with no excess of weight or ripeness and excellent freshness all the way along. Lovely wine. 17/20 (JH)

Massive for the vintage (14.7% alcohol), this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from a small 16-acre vineyard was cropped at 21 hectoliters per hectare. It was made by the remarkably talented team of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt. Inky/purple-colored with notes of crushed rocks, blackberry and blueberry liqueur and hints of charcoal and incense, this full-bodied, rich, dense offering admirably displays its exquisite terroir. Give the 2011 4-5 years of cellaring, and enjoy it over the following 20-25.

Fully saturated, glass-staining ruby-purple. Deep, rich aromas of ripe plum and spiced blackcurrant are complicated in the mouth by flavors of minerals and candied violet. An impression of high acidity and strong minerality gives this young wine a light touch. Finishes very pure and long.

Big and powerful, this is a wine that is supported by dense tannins. The feeling is dry and firm, with a brooding black-currant character.

Open and inviting, with almost gushy blueberry, fig and boysenberry fruit at first. But then there's lively acidity stitching the finish together, with bouncy spice and anise notes and a streak of graphite that should emerge more through the élevage. This has some serious range, echoing with fruit and spice.-J.M.
