about this wine:

Location: Chateau Clerc-Milon is located in Pauillac, just between Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. 69 acres producing 14,000 cases. Classification: 5th Growth Grape Varieties: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon , 25% Merlot, 10% other varieties. Vinification and aging: These wines receive the same treatment as their more famous neighbor and Rothschild stablemate, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Style: The wines of Clerc Milon are firm and well structured due to the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon used to make them. This is a racy young wine with currants and blueberries on the nose and palate. Full and very silky with fine tannins and a balanced finish. A little muscular and lean. 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, and 1% Carmenere.

John Sweeney, JJ Buckley, April 2012

54% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot, 7% cabernet franc, 1% petit verdot, and 1% carmenere. Part of the Rothschild stable, located in the northernmost part of the Pauillac appellation. Vineyards are planted in a mixture of sand and gravel, with more clay towards the river. A toasty and high-toned nose of red and black fruits is complimented by graphite, black pepper, and baking spices. On the palate, vibrant acidity and fairly aggressive tannins provide a contrast to the red fruit and spice notes. This will need time to mellow out but should prove quite age-worthy. Enjoy 2015-2025.

Administrator Philippe Dalhuin told me this property (100 acres) has 240 separate parcels, which must make the strategy of harvesting a nightmare. Composed of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot, the 2011 Clerc Milon is more tannic, tightly knit and structured than its sister chateau, d'Armailhac. With more acidity showing, it performed as if it had just come off malolactic fermentation. Possessing a dense color along with copious notes of new saddle leather, black currants, mocha and wood spice, it will require several years of bottle age, and should keep well for 15+ years. 89-91+

Displays a strong tobacco leaf edge from the start, along with smoke and singed balsam wood notes, all weaving around a core of dark plum and black cherry fruit. A touch firm in the end right now, but shows very good range.-J.M.

About Winery

Chateau Clerc-Milon is located in Pauillac, just between Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Chateau Lafite-Rothschild...69 acres producing 14,000 cases... 5th Growth..65% Cabernet Sauvignon , 25% Merlot, 10% other varieties... These wines receive the same treatment as their more famous neighbor and Rothschild stablemate, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild...This chateau was named a fifth growth in the Medoc Classification of 1855 but always seemed to be an underachiever considering its prime location between two first growths (Mouton and Lafite). It had prime location and soil but never realized the expectations that were placed upon it. The estate is marked by the half-finished chateau which sits on the property. In 1970, the Baron Philippe de Rothschild purchased the property and began a complete renovation of the vineyards and the cellars. New fermentation vats were added to lenghten the maceration time. The chateau started to show what it could become with the fabulous 1982 vintage and really came into it's own in about 1985...The wines of Clerc Milon are firm and well structured due to the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon used to make them. They have hints of raspberry and black currant in the nose and on the palate. These wines are able to easily age for a decade or longer but are suprisingly accessible at much younger ages. They are often approachable when 6 or 7 years old...
