The opaque purple-colored 2011 St.-Joseph La Sensonne comes from 55-year-old vines, is aged in 75% new oak, is bottled unfiltered and is a selection of special barrels from the l'Olivaie lieu-dit. More closed and tannic than its siblings, the goal was to create a more ageworthy cuvee of St.-Joseph. Deep and full-bodied with abundant black raspberry, strawberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with powdered rock, graphite and toast, this 2011 needs 2-3 years of cellaring (atypical for a 2011) and should drink well over the following 12-15 years. 88-90+ -Robert Parker

Lurid purple. Boysenberry, blueberry, Asian spices and a hint of sandalwood on the flamboyant nose. Intensely flavored and rich, with lush dark berry preserve and fruitcake flavors lifted by notes of candied licorice and smoky minerals. A sweet, juicy wine that also shows an elegant side, with a smooth, spicy finish featuring harmonious tannins and a touch of mocha.
