about this wine:

Purchased in 1998 from the daughter of the local blacksmith - hence the name - the initial vineyard was primarily based on a gravel outcrop, assembled over the generations with land appropriated in lieu of unpaid bills.Since the acquisition additional vineyards have been purchased on both sandy and clay over limestone soils hugging the town of Saint Emilion. The six-hectare vineyard of the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru uniquely draws together the three terroirs of the Saint Emilion Appellation. Around ninety percent of the vineyard is composed of old-vine Merlot with the rest being Cabernet Franc.

Green harvesting ensures that cropping is low. The grapes are harvested by hand and, after double-triage, are vinified in modern oak vats. The wine is subject to consistent lees suspension during ageing to enhance the body of the wine.

Devon Magee, JJ Buckley, April 2012

Planted to 90% old-vine merlot and 10% cabernet franc on 6 hectares of vineyards spread out over the three terroirs of St. Emilion: clay, limestone, and sand. Reserved and muted on the nose, this comes to life on the palate with broad, horizontal width. Mineral purity and cool black and blue fruits lead the pure silk texture. This wine is all about polished style and weighty mouthfeel, the signatures of owner Jonathan Malthus. Will be approachable young after decanting and through 2028.

90 -93 points,

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2012

This 2,500-case blend from three separate St.-Emilion terroirs is composed of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. Copious aromas of graphite, sweet black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with notions of underbrush, forest floor, camphor and Asian spice emerge from this complex, medium to full-bodied 2011. Loaded with color, fruit and surprisingly silky extract, it should drink well for 10+ years.
