about this wine:
"Monbousquet is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks and the wine is then aged in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months. Monbousquet is bottled unfined and unfiltered...Mature open nose of mulberries and wet straw. A little dry on the palate with mature tannins. Well-structured with fine chewy black fruits. Quite spicy on the finish..."

60% merlot, 30% cabernet franc, and 10% cabernet sauvignon. 13.9% potential alcohol. From a 32-hectare estate on the St. Emilion cote just south of the town of St. Emilion. Soils are sandy clay with a significant iron component. Average vine age is 30+ years. Aged in 60% new oak. Dense, opaque purple. Revealing little initial bouquet, the barest hint of fruit appears with air. The palate is balanced, with round, densely textured black cherry fruit. With subtle tannins, the deep, medium to full-bodied fruit continues on toward a fine, subtly firm finish. Will provide great drinking for the next two decades. From the Gerard Perse portfolio. Tasted three times.

A closed and silky wine with blueberry and spices with hints of toasted oak. Full-bodied with firm tannins and a long finish. Slightly hollow mid-palate.

Tiny yields of 31 hectoliters per hectare and a harvest that occurred between September 16-22 resulted in a full-throttle 2011 Monbousquet that hit 13.9% natural alcohol. The final blend was 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. In both blind and non-blind tastings, this wine acquitted itself extremely well, placing well above many wines that cost two to three times the price. The 2011 reveals exotic notes of Asian spices, black fruits, toast, coffee bean and forest floor. Fleshy and medium to full-bodied, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-12 years.

Offers sweet linzer torte and loganberry fruit, with good underlying zip and well-embedded spice and anise notes. A clearly ripe style, but with nice focus. Very solid.-J.M.
