This is very racy and long with full body, silky tannins and an intense minerally, citrus rind character. It lasts for minutes. Goes to a pleasant bitterness. Dark chocolate too. Muscular with tension.

100% merlot. 11.5 hectare estate on blue clay soils with a high iron content. Vines average 45 years in age, with yields of 35 hl/ha. Aged in 50% new oak. Opaque with a clay-like tint. Blackberry liqueur and cassis fruit flavors seasoned with fresh brewed espresso and a hint of iron. A licorice, mineral element kicks in on the mid-palate. This merlot is truly world class, with acid and fruit in balance, and its greatest virtue being its spectacularly seamless palate. Drinkable now, yet this is Petrus' most tannic vintage on record. It's a truly confounding effort, and I'm not sure what to make of it. One thing is for sure, it lacks the structure of the 2010 and 2009. The estate director suggests that the 2011 will be aligned with the 2001 and will develop nicely in bottle. Approachable in its youth, enjoy over the following 20 years. 65% of the production of this iconic estate went into the Petrus bottling this year.

Harvested between September 12-27, the fruit-driven 2011 Petrus is atypically forward and already appealing. It reveals lots of mulberry and dark cherry fruit along with surprising tannin. However, the latter component does not interfere with the wine's classic, structured style. Tipping the scales at 13.5% natural alcohol, it is made from 100% Merlot and is aged in 55% new oak. An excellent to outstanding Petrus (although much lighter than the 2010, 2009 and 2008), it should be drinking well within 2-4 years and last for 15-20.

Opaque ruby. Reticent nose is less aromatically explosive than usual at this early stage but still offers great depth of pure cassis, violet and coffees aromas. Then very elegant on the palate, with rich, ripe but tightly wound cassis and chocolately flavors nicely framed by silky tannins. Finishes lively, floral and long. Considering its concentration and density, this is an almost charming Petrus.

A strong pebbly feel weaves through the crushed damson plum and linzer torte notes, with a sweet spice edge starting to peek out on the bitter cherry-tinged finish. Not tightly knit yet, but shows solid length and concentration for the vintage. Tasted non-blind.-J.M.
