James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, April 2012

I like the quality of the tannins here, which are ripe but not overdone. Full and round with chocolate and berry character. Balanced.

Neil Mechanic, JJ Buckley, April 2012

Planted to 85% merlot and 15% cabernet sauvignon on 18 hectares. Average vine age is 30 years, planted in clay and gravel soils. A weedy prune-like nose in this sample showed some sappy qualities not indicative of the category. The palate emitted viscous blackberry and currant flavors along with hints of espresso and spicy anise. Medium firm tannins expand, becoming powdery on the finish, an improvement on the nose and entry. Part of the Moueix stable. Enjoy 2015-2025.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2012

The deep ruby/plum/purple-tinged 2011 exhibits sandy, loamy soil, ripe cassis and kirsch scents. Surprisingly flamboyant and opulent for the vintage with good acidity, ripe tannins and a long, layered style, it should drink well for 15+ years.

Older readers, who may remember the light, fruity, but pleasant and charming wines Rouget produced 25-30 years ago, will be shocked at how rich, full-throttle and intense current releases have become.

About Winery

Château Rouget, one of the oldest estates in Pomerol, belonged to M. Bayonne until 1804, who was for a long time mayor of the commune. In the second edition of "Bordeaux et ses Vins", published in 1868, this growth was ranked fifth. Since 1992, the Societe des Grands Vins de Pomerol has purchased Château Rouget from M. Brochet. This fine 16-hectare estate is situated on the gentle slope of the Pomerol plateau near the villiage of the ancient church. The vineyard is planted with the best selected grapes (85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc) on soil which is partly gravel, partly clayey-ferruginous and produces a wine remarkable for its richness, body and softness and which possesses to the highest degree the characteristic, highly fragrant bouquet of the great Pomerols. All these qualities rank Château Rouget among the great growths of Pomerol and explain the reputation it enjoys in France and abroad. It has been awarded the highest prizes at the various international exhibitions it has participated in. Very important building and renovation works have been carried out on the wine facilities. The whole of the production of Château Rouget and Vieux Château des Templiers is aged in oak.
