40% made with whole berries and fermented in 600-litre casks, from 2010 onwards. (Jean-Philippe Fort has been the consultant for many years, from 1994 when Rolland gave them the boot, and they are pioneers of this technique in St-Émilion.) Deep purplish crimson. Very rich and dramatic. Really very different from most 2011s, smoother and plumper yet with a certain amount of freshness. Bravo! Fruit is emphasised. 17/20

Planted to 75% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon on 16.5 hectares of mixed clay and limestone soil. Vines average 35 years old, with a planting density of 6,200 vines per hectare. Aged in 80% new oak. Purplish pink color. Prune, plum, cassis, and floral notes emerge first with chalky minerality and chocolate following. Medium to full bodied with nice persistence of tannin and acidity and a wonderfully rich and long finish. This will need a few years to gain its equilibrium, but I am confident that it will do just that. Enjoy 2017-2030.

A typical example of Beau-Sejour Becot (a 40-acre vineyard on top of St.-Emilion's limestone plateau), yields were 37 hectoliters per hectare and the wine is relatively powerful for a 2011 (14.5% alcohol). The final blend was 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. This modern-styled effort exhibits copious aromas of toasty oak, espresso roast, melted chocolate, black currants and cherries. The nearly exotic, somewhat flamboyant and elegant St.-Emilion is not a big bruiser, but rather possesses plenty of finesse and freshness because of its acid levels. It should drink well for two decades.

Purple, glass-staining ruby. Smells very oaky today, with vanilla and cedary lead pencil notes currently dominating a cassis aroma. Then sweet and rich on entry, with black fruit and mocha flavors emerging from plenty of tough tannins. This will need plenty of time, but will it ever be a charming wine?

Mint flavors make the initial impression, with its fruit buried deep in the concentrated structure. Wood tannins dominate this polished wine, but its finish shows a juicy character.

Nice density, with a solid, coated feel mid-palate as the fig and boysenberry flavors roll along, supported by graphite, pain d'épices and licorice snap on the back end. Nicely imbedded acidity, too.-J.M.
