Soft, weighty and accessible Sauvingon Blanc with hints of leaf, nutty yeast lees, mineral and bright tree fruit flavours. Exquisitely balanced wine with a lengthy finish.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2012

Greywacke's 2011 Sauvignon Blanc reveals lemon pastille, lime leaf and grapefruit notes with hints of passion fruit and peach blossoms. Light to medium-bodied, it is very elegant with good intensity of fruit, vibrant acidity and a long, chalky finish. Drink it now through 2014. -Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Stephen Tanzer's IWC, September 2012

Pale, bright yellow. Highly aromatic nose combines grapefruit rind, underripe pineapple, white pepper, fresh herbs and stony minerality. Rich, pliant and fairly full, but with a juicy sappy quality to the orange blossom and spice flavors. In a rather forward style but bright framing acidity gives it definition and thrust. Finishes with excellent length. Greywacke is the new project of sauvignon blanc guru Kevin Judd, who put Cloudy Bay on the map during his 25 years as winemaker there.

Former Cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd's new label displays a vibrant pungency to its leafy aromas, then opens up on the palate to add gooseberry and grapefruit notes. It's refreshingly medium bodied, with a slightly creamy texture and a long finish filled with pink grapefruit. - J.C.

Wine Front, November 2011

It's pretty clear that winemaker Kevin Judd pays close attention to the texture in his wines. The chardonnay had a softness to it and so too this sauvignon blanc. Indeed it has a lot going for it. It tastes of flint and gravel, passionfruit and (subtle) rosewater. Green melon too. oomph and texture without it being too in-your-face. The end result: drinkability plus.

This intriguing white delivers a complex aromatic note that includes whiffs of petrol, oolong tea, mineral and lanolin, giving way to an equally complex flavor profile. Crunchy green apple, Meyer lemon and melon flavors are refreshing, balanced, and persistent on the finish. Drink now. -MW

About Winery

After 25 years at the iconic Cloudy Bay Winery, founding winemaker and passionate photographer Kevin Judd left the only winery he ever knew to start his own venture. Never an easy step to take after all those years, Kevin felt he was ready to take on some new challenges. So began Greywacke, a name that Kevin had filed away for future use that came in handy three years ago. Named after a local sandstone type soil found in the Wairau plains, Greywacke is Kevin's new winery, an effort to get back to the hands on, intuitive and personal approach to winemaking.
