Chuck Hayward, JJ Buckley, April 2012

100% merlot. Aged 18 months in 65% new oak. From a 9-hectare estate near Valandraud, Fleur Cardinale and Rol Valentin. Average vine age is a high 50 years, planted in limestone soils with yields of 25 hl/ha. Dark in color. The nose is dominated by very ripe black fruit aromas with notes of warm stones and smoke. Initially a bit syrupy in texture, the dark black fruit flavors transition toward crunch ripe cherry on the backpalate. Fresh acidity and firm tannins need to integrate for a harmonious finish. Wait a few years after release and enjoy between 2017-2030. Tasted twice.

Very chewy with loads of ripe fruit and a wet earth and blackberry character. Dark chocolate too. Full and rich. Juicy. Rich depth of fruit. Pure Merlot as always.

You know, my scathing review of the 2008 (blind) prompted a polite letter of enquiry from the estate. I have no problem with that (and at least the letter was polite!) The Peby-Faugeres 2011 was picked from 23rd until 26th September. It actually has a lovely opulent bouquet that is pure and not overpowering and has gorgeous floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins on the entry with very good balance, crisp acidity and (I cannot believe I am writing this) engaging elegant finish. See...I like you, really. Tasted April 2012.

The estate's luxury cuvee, the 2011 Peby Faugeres comes from the oldest (averaging 45 years) sector of the vineyard and is essentially 100% Merlot. Yields were 26 hectoliters per hectare and the fruit was harvested at the end of September. The wine is packaged in a spectacularly beautiful engraved glass bottle. Opaque purple in color, the 2011 is one of the most intense, full and rich wines of the vintage. Notes of ink, graphite, blueberries, black raspberries, toasty oak, white chocolate and mocha are all present in this full-throttle, expansive, savory St.-Emilion. It should drink well for two decades or more.

One of the up-and-coming stars of St.-Emilion, Faugeres is owned by Swiss entrepreneur, Silvio Benz (also the owner of the Lalique crystal company. 92-94+

This goes for it, with bold mocha and ganache aromas followed by dark plum, blackberry and blueberry pāte de fruit notes. The dark, anise-filled finish flirts with overextraction, but ultimately there's beautiful mouthfeel and good vibrancy as the fruit echoes. An impressive effort.-J.M.

About Winery

Chateau Faugeres is situated on the sunny slopes of the Dordogne valley, 6 KM east of Saint-Emillion, in one of the most beautiful winegrowing sites tn the Bordeaux region. The city of Saint-Emilion and its environs were added to the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 1999. Before being acquired by Silvio Denz in April 2005, Chateau Faugeres had been in the ownership of the Pierre-Bernard Guisez family since 1823. The Vineyards, covering approximately 80 hectares, surround an 18th-century carthsian monastery and are divided between two AOCs: Saint-Emillion (49 hectares) and Cotes de Castillon (31 hectares). After 18 years devoted to the renaissance of Chateau Faugeres, their objective remains the same: to go even further in terms of quality.
