55% cabernet sauvignon, 45% merlot. From a 70-hectare vineyard, comprised of gravel and clay soils. Average vine age is 35 years, with yields of 45 hl/ha. Aged for 16-18 months in 50% new oak barrels. Opaque purple core with a fuchsia rim. Blackberry aromas dominate the nose, along with an undercurrent of spring flowers, pain grille, and tar. Black cherry and cassis flavors on entry mirror the bouquet, building to a weighty mid-palate dominated by sharp tannins that are somewhat out of balance with the fruit. Tasted twice. Enjoy from 2015 to 2023.

The Phelan-Segur has an attractive bouquet with crisp blackberry and floral aromas, pretty in a similar way to Lilian Ladouys. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp chalky tannins. A sleeper of the vintage, this is a beautiful follow-up, in a much more challenging vintage, to their exceptional 2009. Deep plum/purple-hued with a nose of mulberries, black currants and cassis, the wine is dense, medium-bodied, ripe for a 2011, with good underlying acidity and a seriously endowed, layered texture. The tannins are present, but well-integrated and ripe. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

About Winery

Bernard Phelan, a young Irish wine broker, left his home at the end of the 18th century to settle in Bordeaux. He married one of the daughters of Daniel Guestier, a well-known merchant in the market.  With the benefit of his father-in-law's experience, he was able to start thinking about making his own wines.
In order to do this, he acquired le Clos de Garamey, located in Saint-Estephe, in 1805, followed in 1810 by the Segurde Cabanac estate.  He thus created a magnificent wine-producing domain that remains practically unchanged today.
