Sadly, the bottle tasted in Philadelphia was corked. A bottle from my cellar was close to full maturity, exhibiting plenty of amber to its dense ruby/garnet color in addition to abundant sweet black cherry fruit, smoky, mineral, earth, and dried herb aromas. Fleshy, spicy, and full-bodied, with the vintage's tell-tale succulence, high glycerin, and low acidity giving the wine a fat, plush personality, this 1982 should drink well for another decade, although it is clearly within its plateau of maturity.

This fully mature, gorgeously seductive, fragrant, complex wine offers up intense aromas of jammy fruit, mocha, roasted herbs, and sweet toasty oak. Full-bodied, with expansive, chewy concentration, gobs of fruit, and a soft, low acid plushness, this is the most gorgeous Trotanoy made following the superb 1975. Although still young, it is soft, delicious, and ideal for drinking over the next 10-15+ years. Tasted 11 times since bottling with consistent notes.

1982 marks the end of a great span of vintages for Trotanoy. In the forties, fifties, sixties, and early seventies this estate often made one of Bordeaux's most compelling wines. The 1982, which is just reaching full maturity, exhibits a dense, saturated ruby/purple color, and a huge bouquet filled with aromas of jammy, curranty fruit, spicy oak, chocolate, coffee, and herbs. Massive yet unctuous and velvety-textured, this super-concentrated, precociously-styled Trotanoy is a thrilling wine. It should last for at least another 15-20 years. What a shame that it represents the last of the great Trotanoys. I wonder why? Last tasted, 4/93.

Not quite as grand as I remember, but still a rich, pretty Pomerol. Dark ruby-garnet color, with tobacco, cherry and earth character. Full-bodied and concentrated, with firm tannins and a long, ripe fruit and dark chocolate finish.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. Drink now. –JS
