1994 Petrus Bordeaux Blend
Reviews of 1994 Petrus Bordeaux Blend
91-93 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 1995 Although the 1994 Petrus is slightly less concentrated than the exceptional 1993 (one of the top candidates for the "wine of the vintage"), it is unquestionably a powerful, tannic, backward wine that surpasses what this estate produced in such very good vintages as 1985 and 1986. The color is a deep, dark ruby/purple. With coaxing, the closed nose offers up scents of coffee, herb-tinged, jammy black-cherries, and toasty new oak. The wine is superbly concentrated, with a high tannin level, and a long, structured, backward finish. Do not touch a bottle before 2005; it will last for 25-40 years.
93-94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 1996 The 1994 Petrus has emerged from its cloak of tannin and is exhibiting a profoundly dark, opaque color, powerful aromas of overripe mulberries and blackcurrants intermingled with toasty, spicy, oak, and fabulously sweet, rich fruit. This extremely dense, powerful, highly-extracted wine will need 5-8 years of cellaring. It is a sensational effort from this small estate. Look for it to rival Latour and Lafleur as one of the three longest-lived wines of the vintage; it will age for 30-35 years.
All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.
93 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 1997 After several uninspiring efforts between 1978 and 1988, it is irrefutable that Christian Moueix and his flagship estate, Petrus, have rebounded with a vengeance, producing a bevy of extraordinary wines, even in rain-plagued vintages such as 1992 and 1993. Opaque purple/black in color, with a sweet vanilla, pain grillee, jammy cherry and cassis-scented nose, this full-bodied, densely packed wine reveals layers of flavor, and an inner-core of sweetness with huge quantities of glycerin and depth. A tannic, classic style of Petrus, with immense body, great purity, and a backward finish, this wine requires a decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035.
93 points, Wine Spectator January 1997 Wonderfully rich and concentrated, with milk chocolate, berry and floral aromas, loads of fruit flavors and soft, round tannins. Full-bodied and has good length. A great wine for the vintage, but then, what do you expect from Pétrus? Better from 1999 on, but inviting now. 3,200 cases made. –JS

About 1994 Petrus Bordeaux Blend
About the Winery Petrus
"The Pomerol appellation is comprised of small properties producing modest quantities of generally excellent wines, at expensive prices. Pomerols are usually rich and full-bodied red wines, which blend the aromas of black cherry, black currant and blackberry. These are well-structured and complex wines. Château Petrus' vineyards cover 5.5 acres and produce 35,000 bottles per year. Thanks to the astute management of Christian Moueix and his team, Petrus is reputed to be the best Pomerol in the world. Indeed, the processes used by Château Petrus have resulted in the creation of a wine characterized by an intense, dark color, and by extremely delicate tannins."
